Winter Dysentery

Every fall it seems about deer season, many smaller herds like those in the organic world go through a bout of diarrhea. The most common syndrome is and has been called winter dysentery. For decades it usually hits the heifers the hardest. If there was no dysentery the previous year then older animals will also get it. The causative agent has never been isolated, thus no vaccine exists. It’s usually a transitory 3 day loose stool that smells foul. The hardest hit ones will have some tinge of blood in the stool which means more severe infection. These animals should be put on Arnica Tincture about 5 cc’s twice a day orally. Herds that are vaccinated for all the common bacteria and viruses get winter dysentery just the same as the non-vaccinated. Putting the herd on Aloe Vera Pellets 6-7 ounces per day will stimulate the immune system and moderate the severity. For the average dysentery treatment, use Detox Boluses 2 twice a day and free choice reed sedge peat (humates) to the entire herd. Nux Vomica homeopathy pills in the water or orally 2 to 3 times a day also helps. Winter dysentery hasn’t changed in the 52 years since I became a vet. Very few cows die from it, but it does depress production causing economic loss. Don’t confuse it with BVD, Salmonella, or Johnes as they are much more severe. Johnes presents one cow at a time. Our catalog is done, let us know if you’d like some!
